So what do you need to know about food allergies before planning your big event?
What is a Food Allergy?
A food allergy is when the body’s immune system reacts unusually to specific foods. Although allergic reactions are often mild in nature, they can be very serious.
Symptoms of a food allergy can affect several different areas of the body at the simultaneously. Some common symptoms include:
- Itchy red sensations inside the mouth, throat or ears.
- Itchy red rashes (urticaria, or ‘hives’)
- Swelling of the face, around the eyes, lips, tongue and roof of the mouth.
If you ever see any of these symptoms occurring within your guests, it is important that you seek medical attention for them.
In the most extreme cases of allergic reactions, anaphylaxis can occur which has the potential to be life threatening. Take it from a catering Company Wigan that is concerned so highly with safety, if you suspect a person is going into anaphylaxis shock you need to call an ambulance straight away and communicate this with them.
Tell the operator that they are going into anaphylaxis shock.
What is The Cause of Food allergies?
Food allergies happen when the immune system, the body’s defence against infection and other harmful agents, mistakenly treats proteins found within different foods as a threat.
As a result of thus, chemicals are released internally. These chemicals are what cause the symptoms of an allergic reaction.
Pretty much any food can cause an allergic reaction if your immune system recognises them as being harmful but here are some of the most common which as a catering company Wigan, we look out for and cater for the most:
- Tree Nuts (such as walnuts, brazil nuts, almonds and hazelnuts)
- Shellfish (such as prawns, lobster and crab)
It is still widely unknown why people develop allergic reactions to food, although it is common place for them to have other health conditions such as asthma, hay fever and eczema.
What is Food Intolerance?
A food intolerance is not the same as a food allergy.
People with food intolerances may have symptoms such as diarrhoea, bloating and stomach cramps. This is caused by difficulties to digest certain substances such as lactose however, no allergic reaction takes place.
Although not life threatening, as a catering company Wigan, we always ensure that we cater for intolerances as well as allergies at every event.
